Description

Shedding Light on Dark Matter: The Campaign to Directly Detect Dark Matter

Abstract: While the gravitational evidence for dark matter is overwhelming, its fundamental nature remains a central mystery in our understanding of the universe. Here, I will provide an overview of the effort to observe dark matter through its direct interaction with ordinary matter. I’ll present the principles and techniques behind direct detection experiments that aim to probe different theoretical models of dark matter. I will explore the various technologies and strategies being pursued across scales, from table-top quantum sensors to multi-ton scale detectors, highlighting results from leading experiments, current challenges in pushing to ever-greater sensitivities, and promising future directions that may finally unveil the particle nature of dark matter.
