Description
Catching the wave: Theorists and their role in gravitational wave data analysis, a brief history.
Abstract: In many fields of physics it is customary for data analysis to be performed by the experimentalists working on the instrument or the detector, who know it best and can interpret the data most easily. However gravitational wave detector projects frequently have a number of people trained as theorists who help with this kind of work. This may be for manpower reasons, or it could be because no one has ever previously detected a gravitational wave, and therefore theorists, who can model them, bring their own kind of expertise to the task. Since the field is still a new one it is also interesting to look at the development of its technical terms, such as “chirp mass” and its techniques and skills. In this talk I will look at aspects of the history of gravitational wave data analysis, with a view towards developing a more complete history.
